Highlighter Plugin Review

Highlighter Plugin is a FREE Plugin. It is the brainchild of Josh Mullineaux, Matt Blancarte and Nate Whitehill, who are previous founders of Unique Blog Designs.

I cannot remember how I found this plugin but it is pretty neat. It allows people to interact with your site with a comment… but not just any old comment; a comment that is attached to a part of your post that THEY want to highlight. Here is how Highlighter describes it..

Highlighter allows you and your readers to highlight any word, sentence, paragraph, or image and then comment or share on that highlight.

Highlighter comments are also moderatable (I think that might be a word from the DictionKerry). In other words, you can moderate highlights comments just like normal WordPress comments – you can edit or delete any highlight comment.

Another feature of Highlighter is the Highlight Box. Highlighter configuration offers  an option to also place all of the highlighter conversation at the end of a post or page where most web users are accustomed to commenting. But the best part is that you get to control what you want to have show and what does not.

I installed it on this site. I even tested it out a little by commenting one of my other posts. I will use highlighter on this post as well to give you an idea of how it works. It is pretty awesome.

Highligher is as simple as any other WordPress plugin to install and to learn how to configure it is much easier than many other plugins. There is even an area to customize the color of the highlight (so you can match to colors of your site).

One thing I would like to eventually see be implemented into this plugin would be to be able to configure the colors used in their Highlight box. The plugin does come with two options; light and dark. IMHO it would be better to be able to “match” these colors to my site as well. But the Highlighter is still in the beta version and new changes are occurring daily so it would not surprise me if that were soon added.

The vision of Highlighter is to eventually unify what you highlight, comment, and share across all content, platforms and devices, to create a dynamic relationship between publishers and readers. I cannot wait to watch it develop.

This plugin can be found at http://highlighter.com/ and right now they are also holding a contest to win a free iPad. But don’t bother to enter that contest because I plan on winning it!
