Growing Through Association

Choosing to associate with like-minded people or people with the characteristics that I would like to develop in my own life, makes it more likely that those will be the characteristics that will rub off on me.

Don’t befriend angry people or associate with hot-tempered people, or you will learn to be like them and endanger your soul.
Proverbs 22:24-25, NLT

People tend to become like those with whom they spend a lot of time. Even the negative characteristics sometimes rub off. The Bible exhorts us to be cautious in our choice of companions.

I want to be able to develop desirable characteristics within myself so I avoid spending too much time around angry people and I align myself with the kind of people that appeal to the type person that I want to be.

I can’t recall where I heard this example but here is a little experiment. Think of the top ten people that you associate your self with. Now, combine their income and divide by 10. Chances are that your income is very near that amount. Although this example relates to income, the same can be said for mindset, attitude and characteristics. In fact, it can be used to evaluate practically every aspect of my life, including (and perhaps most importantly) protecting my soul.

I am thankful to be able to recognize and associate with the like minded people I have in my life – from my friends and family through my spiritual study and daily business interaction.

Delight in the Law of the Lord

But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night.
Psalm 1:2, NLT

You can learn how to follow God by meditating on his Word. Meditating means spending time reading and thinking about what you have read. It means asking yourself how you should change so you’re living as God wants.

Delight in the Law of the Lord - Books

Knowing and meditating on God’s Word are my first steps toward applying it to my everyday life. If I want to follow God more closely, I must know what He says.

I have always been very familiar with the stories in the Bible. I really did not spend much time actually reading it but knew that all of my core beliefs, values and morals were deeply rooted within it. I did not fully understand the importance of continually reading the Bible. I applied whatever I could when I could.

I recently began reading the Bible more regularly. I am amazed at how easy it was a transition to make and I am very happy that I can now say that it is a daily habit I have. The trick for me was to make it easy to do and then make it a habit. There are all kinds of resources available now-a-days to help me make it easier. I choose to have a daily email sent to me. And each day as I go through my email, I am delivered a daily devotional. I set it up once and it is done.

Now, when I happen across these special email, I make a point to stop and really read and hear the words that are within it. It does not interfere with my routine at all and I am inspired by each message that I get. I look forward my email devotionals as a refreshing break from my worldly life and an opportunity to fill my cup and be able to move forward with an extra boost of spirituality.

I am blessed.

True Friends

Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers.
Psalm 1:1, NLT

This Psalm begins extolling the joys of obeying God and refusing to listen to those who discredit or ridicule him. Our friends and associates can have a profound influence on us, often in very subtle ways. If we insist on friendships with those who mock what God considers important, we might sin by becoming indifferent to God’s will. This attitude is the same as mocking.

True Friends - Tarsier

Do my friends build up my faith, or do they tear it down? True friends should help me to draw closer to God, not hinder my relationship with him.

The evil path is an easy road to follow. I have never been one to do things the easy way – so, I would like to think that I am heading the right direction. I am also human and therefore will sin. I cannot believe that I am beyond that. I must continue to evaluate everything and everyone around me, including myself. I need to surround myself with individuals that will help me in the earthly world to be all that I can be according to His will.

I can also apply this toward my business and the relationships that I choose to develop there. I want my business relationships to based upon a truth and trust. By surrounding myself with businesses and business people that build upon this belief will also help me to be closer to God and continue to grow my relationship with Him as well as grow a healthy business.
